Today, three extremely good reasons to hit your record store (in alphabetical order):
South - With the tides
Their debut album, From here on in, was one of my favorites of 2001. A combination of dreamy melodies and amazing rhythm section that could go on for hours without boring you. On this new release, the trio have kept their Stone Roses feel but got a little more experimental with strings and keyboards, adding a welcome texture and depth to their songs. They still have those killer bass lines and catchy lyrics that made them so irresistible the first time around.
What can i say, this self-titled debut is already one of my top 10 albums of the year. This is pop-new-wavy-rock at its finest. It's a shot of nervous energy and emotional roller-coaster. The album flows from one song to the next, only to leave you wanting more. All the favorites (No Weather, My Coco, etc...) appear on it, re-recorded and remastered. In addition, you'll get the newer, darker and even catchier songs like Moongirl and In the walls. The latter being a strong contestant for best song of the year.
Rufus Wainwright - Want On.
Rufus never fails... this man is without any doubt one of the most talented singer-songwriters we have in the musical landscape today. Once again, he surpassed himself with his third album, composing some of the most complex melodies that will still touch you to the core. The songs go from hopeful to heartbreaking to simply beautiful. The biggest surprise here is the brilliant use of Maurice Ravel's Bolero on the first song Oh, What A World. Rufus is a musical genius, i can't get enough of him.
